SSR- Chapter 4
Summary:
In this chapter, Gerald (Scarlett's father) purchases a slave called Dilcey from the neighborhood (Twelve Oaks) so that Dilcey could be with her husband, Pork, which already worked there. At night, while the family was eating dinner, Dilcey nicely thanks Gerald for being so considerate and letting the family be together. Dilcey offers Gerald for her daughter, Prissy, to work as Scarlett's personal maid. Scarlett expects objections from Mammy, who has always occupied this position, but Dilcey also points out that Mammy is getting old. Scarlett says she will talk about it with Ellen. As Ellen reads the night prayer at dinner, Scarlett conducts a plan in her head to win Ashley's love and separate him from Melanie. She thinks about telling Ashley she loves him at the barbecue the next day. Scarlett is positive that Ashley feels the same way for her that she feels about him. She expects that he will propose, and that they will run off to Jonesboro that afternoon and get married.Analysis of one character:
At this point of the book, I think that Scarlett is starting to act a little immature and self-centered. She is not thinking of what could happen if she declares to Ashley at that barbecue, in which probably his fiancé, Melanie, will attend. She doesn't think on how this could affect her and her family (Melanie's). She could destroy a relationship and can also gain bad reputation.
Story movement/development:
For me pm the main actions that occurred in this chapter that could influence the rest of the story, is Scarlett's plan to tell Ashley she is in love wit him. If she tells Ashley she loves him, he could have a negative or positive reaction, that could influence Scarlett's behavior for the rest of the story. This is important because this confession could make a plot twist in the book and change a lot things. Theme:
A good theme for describing this chapter could be dangers of ignorance. That is exactly how Scarlett is acting or thinking. She is being ignorant for not seeing the damage she could cause if she reveals or declares to Ashley at that barbecue, and what effects if could cause. She is being egocentric and self-centered, only thinking about how declaring her love to Ashley would benefit her.
Thoughts and opinions:
My thoughts right now about the book are positive. I think the book is getting really interesting and I am looking forward to see what happens in the next chapter will Scarlett's decision.
